The Town of West Yellowstone enforces the International Building Code (IBC) within the Town limits. All new construction and most building remodels, whether commercial or residential, require a building permit. Several inspections of the project are conducted by the Building Official to ensure it is being built in compliance with safety standards and in accordance with the IBC. Commercial projects require a final inspection and the Building Official to issue an Occupancy Permit before they can open for business.

The Building Official also serves on the Planning Board. The Planning Board is composed of community volunteers who make recommendations to the Town Council regarding land use, zoning, subdivisions, variance applications, and conditional use applications.
